What agriculture GPS tracking actually covers

Farm tracking is three different problems wearing one name. Powered machines (tractors, harvesters, sprayer rigs, pickups) need utilisation, engine-hour and theft data. Unpowered assets (trailers, seed drills, irrigation pumps, generators) need a location fix every few hours for months without anyone charging a battery. Livestock needs a light, sealed unit that survives water, mud and being rubbed against a fence post.

The buyers are also different: a co-operative or contractor tracking its own machines, a dealer or finance company protecting equipment sold on credit, and a tracking reseller packaging all of this for farms in its region. Tractors, harvesters and farm vehicles: hardwired trackers

Anything with a battery gets a wired unit hidden behind the dash or under the seat. The tracker takes power from the machine, so it reports continuously while the engine runs and switches to a low-power heartbeat when parked. The two signals that matter for farm use are ACC (ignition) state, which produces engine hours, and an external power-cut alarm, which fires the moment a thief disconnects the battery lead.

The GT06 4G is the baseline: 4G with 2G fallback, vibration and overspeed alarms, GT06 protocol, no platform lock-in. The J10 covers regions where 2G is still the reliable network, reports ACC state on every upload, raises a power-down alarm and can cut fuel remotely where the operator has wired the relay. The GX3 adds low-voltage and power-outage alarms for machines that sit for weeks between jobs.

Tractors and harvesters run 12 V or 24 V systems, so specify the supply voltage on the quote; the wide-voltage models cover both. Implements, pumps, trailers and generators: units that need no power

Most stolen farm assets have no battery: irrigation pumps, generators, seed drills, balers, trailers and sprayer tanks. For these the tracker must carry its own energy and spend it slowly. Two Skywonder designs do that in different ways.

Livestock: collar trackers with geofence alerts

The V55 4G animal tracker is a sealed, impact-resistant collar unit that combines GPS, BeiDou and Wi-Fi positioning so it still returns a fix under trees or near sheds. It supports an electronic fence, so the platform raises an alarm the moment an animal enters or leaves the paddock, and one-click location of the herd from the app.

Livestock tracking is usually sold per head to larger ranches and dairy co-operatives, or as a theft-recovery product in regions where cattle rustling is common. Connectivity in rural areas: bands, 2G and reporting intervals

Farms sit at the edge of mobile coverage, so three decisions matter more than in a city fleet. First, the radio: choose the LTE band variant for the country, and keep 2G fallback where the operator still runs it; the 4G tracker guide lists the band variants per model. Second, the reporting interval on battery units: a fix every few hours is enough for a pump and stretches standby to years, while a machine on hire may justify hourly fixes. Third, blind-area buffering: wired units store positions while out of coverage and upload when the signal returns, so the track is complete even where the field has no signal.

Where there is no mobile coverage at all, a GPS tracker cannot report. In those cases the practical answer is a longer interval on a unit that buffers, and a geofence at the point where the asset re-enters coverage on a road.
