Why Choose Asset Trackers?
Key Features
Buyer guide
An asset GPS tracker is a self-powered unit fitted to something with no ignition feed, a container, trailer, generator set, excavator or pallet cage, so the specification argument is about battery capacity, reporting interval and mounting rather than wiring. SKYWONDER manufactures the range in Shenzhen, from a 4200 mAh lithium-manganese W09 rated for up to three years of standby to a 20000 mAh GT76, with MOQ 50-100 units, white-label from 100 units and the Traqcare platform included. The guide below matches device classes to buyer types, compares published specifications side by side, then covers OEM tiers, sampling and factory QC.
How to choose an asset GPS tracker
Start from the asset, not the datasheet. Three questions settle most of the decision: is power available, how often do you genuinely need a position, and what surface will the device sit on.
Everything else, network bands, ingress rating, tamper alarms, follows from those answers. A wired vehicle unit fitted to an unpowered trailer is the most expensive mistake in this category; see wired versus wireless asset trackers.
The five buyer profiles below cover most of the orders we quote. Vehicles with a permanent supply belong in vehicle GPS trackers instead.
Logistics and container operators
Containers and swap bodies sit still for days, then move across borders on a third-party chassis. That duty cycle favours a large cell with motion-triggered wake rather than a continuous feed.
Steel constrains positioning as much as mounting. The GT76 4G Standby King lists a BeiDou, GPS, WiFi and LBS location mode, so it has something to fall back on inside a stack; the Y9 adds solar charging, Hall-effect tamper protection and water-drop detection for marine legs.
The depot geofence and dwell workflow is set out under logistics and cold chain.
Construction and heavy equipment owners
Site plant faces dust, vibration, wash-down and theft, and is often parked for weeks between jobs. Specify ingress rating and tamper behaviour first, then capacity.
The W09 GPS Tracker for Equipment is built for this: a 4200 mAh lithium-manganese pack quoted at up to three years of continuous service in standard operating mode, four neodymium magnets, and fence, overspeed, low-battery and stop alarms. The W10 4G Standby King is IP65 with an operating range of - 30℃ ~ + 80℃.
Further reading: GPS trackers for equipment and tracking for agriculture, which shares the same seasonal-idle pattern.
Trailer and semi-trailer fleets
A trailer changes tractor several times a week, so tying its visibility to the tractor defeats the purpose. Fit the trailer with its own battery device and let the platform associate the two by proximity.
Yard-heavy operations run well on motion-triggered reporting plus a daily heartbeat. Line-haul work that owes the customer a live ETA needs a shorter interval and a larger cell, which is where the 15600 mAh Y8 and 20000 mAh GT76 earn their size.
Rental and lease equipment companies
Rental fleets need two things the other profiles do not: proof of utilisation for billing disputes, and a removal alarm that fires before the asset leaves the yard.
The GT76 uses a high-sensitivity light sensor to alarm when the unit is prised off, and the W12 Rechargeable Standby Champion triggers on removal, movement and abnormal vibration. Rechargeable units suit rental because the asset returns to the depot on a known cycle.
For low-value items moving inside a depot, the Portable BLE Tag Tracker reports through a crowd-sourced Bluetooth network.
Resellers and white-label brands
Resellers buy a range, not a model, because their customers arrive with different assets. A workable opening catalogue is one long-standby magnetic unit, one rechargeable mid-capacity unit, one solar unit and one tag.
Order economics matter more than any single spec: MOQ 50-100 units by product, white-label from 100 units, samples of 3-10 units in 5-7 business days. See the reseller programme and GPS tracker MOQ.
Branding runs on both sides: hardware through white-label GPS trackers, software through a Traqcare tenant on your domain.
Reporting interval versus battery life
Reporting interval is the single setting that decides how long an asset tracker lasts, because every wake-up costs a GNSS fix plus a cellular attach, and the attach is the larger share. Capacity sets the ceiling; the interval decides how fast you spend it.
SKYWONDER publishes a standby figure only where cell capacity and duty cycle support one. The W09 states a 4200 mAh lithium-manganese pack providing up to three years of continuous service under standard operating mode; the SW05 Magnetic Tracker states several months of continuous operation under normal use. Elsewhere the tiers below are qualitative on purpose, and we confirm expected life per model and configuration at quotation.
- Continuous while moving, full route trace and accurate dwell times, for high-value loads on short contracted routes. Shortest life; plan a recharge cycle or a powered feed.
- Frequent interval, minutes, route shape is clear with corners rounded off, enough for a live customer ETA. Short to medium life.
- Hourly interval, leg-level visibility across a trailer or container pool: origin, corridor, destination. Medium to long life.
- Motion-triggered wake plus daily heartbeat, movement events plus one daily confirmation, for yard plant that sits idle for weeks. Longest life, and the configuration multi-year figures assume.
- Conditions that shorten all four, weak signal inside steel forces attach retries, and cold reduces usable cell capacity. The W10 power-saving mode uses a G-sensor to keep the unit near idle until the asset moves.
Mounting: magnetic, screw-fixed or concealed
Magnetic mounting is the default in this category because it needs no tools and leaves no holes in a leased asset. The GT76 lists five neodymium magnets, the W09 four, and the W10 and W07 both ship with a strong magnet for metal bodywork.
Magnets need clean steel. Aluminium skins, GRP panels and rusted surfaces reduce holding force, and the wheel-arch spray line will eventually work a unit loose.
- Magnetic, fastest to deploy and easy to retrieve at end of lease; also the easiest for a thief to remove, so pair it with a tamper or light-sensor alarm.
- Screw-fixed or bracketed, the right answer on plant that vibrates hard or gets pressure-washed. Use the published host dimensions to confirm clearance before designing a bracket.
- Concealed, inside a chassis rail, cavity or toolbox lid. Keep sky in view of the antenna: inside a loaded steel container, expect a fall back to WiFi or LBS positioning until the doors open.
- Card and tag form factors, the GT33 ID card tracker at 81.2mm x 54.2mm x 6.5mm and the BLE tag at 37 x 16 mm slide into document pockets, cases and crates where a magnet has nothing to grip.

Asset tracker specification comparison
Every value below comes from the published specification sheet for that SKU. Where a figure is not published, the cell reads a dash rather than an estimate.
Read it in two passes: capacity and ingress decide whether the device survives the asset, then start times, sensitivity and channel count decide how fast it produces a usable fix.
Compact and portable units
Five models in the range sit below the long-standby class, for assets where size or unit cost rules out a large cell. They appear across the portable GPS trackers category as well.
- W07 4G Portable GPS Tracker, 74.9 x 45.8 x 30.5mm, 142.4g including magnet, battery options 1200 / 3000 / 6000 / 10000 mAh, SIMCOM A7670SA on LTE Cat 1 with 2G fallback, GPS / BDS / GLONASS / AGPS / WiFi positioning, 4000 logs of blind-spot storage, FOTA upgrade.

Platform and software: Traqcare, protocols and integration
Every SKYWONDER asset tracker ships ready for Traqcare, our white-label platform on web, iOS and Android: live tracking, playback, alerts, geofences, fuel management, reports, device management and user roles.
White-labelling is the point for most buyers here, your domain, logo and app identity over the device fleet. For market context see white-label GPS tracking platforms for 2026.
If you already run a platform, nothing locks you in. Trackers speak GT06 and dashcams and MDVRs speak JT/T 808, and both are compatible with Traccar, Wialon, Navixy and GPS-Trace without opening ports.
- Protocol, asset trackers report over GT06; packet structure, login handshake and buffered-record behaviour are covered in the GT06 protocol guide.
- Alerts on unpowered assets, geofence entry and exit, tamper or removal, vibration, low battery and overspeed, configurable per device group.
- Playback windows, six months of historical trajectory on the GT76, three months on the SW05, 90 days on the BLE tag.
- Blind-area buffering, the W07 stores 4000 logs and the GT33 up to 300 records when a device is located but offline, resending once signal returns.
- Remote management, the W12 supports online firmware upgrade and remote parameter configuration, so a deployed fleet is reconfigured in batches rather than recalled.
- Integration, server endpoints, data formats and test devices under developers; SIM and data planning in SIM cards for GPS trackers and tracker data consumption.

OEM, ODM and white-label: what changes at each tier
Asset trackers are the easiest category to brand: the housing is a sealed box with no dashboard to match. Most resellers start with logo and packaging, then add firmware changes once volumes justify it.
Work through the checklist below before requesting a quotation. Each answered item removes a round trip from the sampling stage.
- Logo method, silk screen, laser engraving or moulded into the housing, decided against your housing colour.
- Housing colour, custom colour and button colours on the standard tooling.
- Retail packaging, your box design, insert, user manual and quick start guide, in the languages your market needs.
- Serial numbering, custom serial prefix so returns and warranty claims map to your records.
- Pre-configured APN, devices arrive with the carrier settings for your market, removing a per-unit step at your warehouse.
- Server endpoint, factory-set to your platform or Traqcare tenant, primary and backup where supported.
- Reporting profile, default interval, motion-wake thresholds and heartbeat, set to your deployment rather than to ours.
- Alarm set, which of the tamper, vibration, geofence, overspeed and low-battery alarms are enabled out of the box.
- Cell option, on the W07 and W08, which of the 1200 / 3000 / 6000 / 10000 mAh builds you want.
- Certification and import, confirm the test reports your market demands with your customs broker; see certifications and importing GPS trackers from China.
- Platform branding, domain, logo, app icon and user roles on your Traqcare tenant; see the reseller programme.

Four industries that buy this category
Containers and intermodal logistics
A container spends most of its life outside your control: on a third-party chassis, in a stack, on a vessel. The tracker has to survive that and report enough to settle a demurrage or loss claim.
Specify a sealed body, a tamper alarm and fallback positioning for the periods inside steel. The GT76 and the solar Y9 cover the two ends of this job, and dwell reporting in Traqcare turns raw positions into yard and port metrics.
Construction and heavy equipment
Plant theft is opportunistic and usually happens overnight from an unmanned site, so the alarm path matters more than position history. Set a site geofence, enable the tamper and vibration alarms, and route both to a phone rather than a dashboard nobody watches after six.
Utilisation is the second reason this industry buys. Movement events plus daily heartbeats show which machines actually worked, which is the evidence base for a hire-versus-own decision; see our overview of GPS asset tracking.
Trailers, yards and unpowered fleet
Trailer visibility is a yard problem before it is a road problem. Once the first month of dwell data lands, most operators find a large share of the pool parked far longer than anyone believed.
Fit a magnetic unit on the chassis rail near the kingpin and run motion-triggered reporting with a daily heartbeat. Powered tractor units belong on a hard-wired device from the 4G GPS tracker range.
Rental, leasing and asset finance
Rental and lease books need three things from a tracker: is the asset where the contract says, is it used as declared, and can we recover it. The W12 and GT76 cover the removal alarm, and rechargeable cells suit assets that return to a depot between hires.
Finance portfolios apply the same logic to vehicles, with a wired device and a recovery workflow: see auto finance and BHPH and car rental.
How to order samples and place a first order
Sampling answers what a datasheet cannot: how the magnet holds on your asset, how the unit behaves inside your container, and how your platform parses the packets. Order two or three models rather than one, because the comparison is the point.
- 1
Send the requirement
Tell us the asset type, quantity, country of deployment and the reporting interval you have in mind. Country sets the network bands and, on 2G models such as the W08 and SW05, whether the network is still live.
- 2
Receive a quotation
We return a detailed quotation covering the unit, any tooling, shipping options and payment terms. Standard terms are T/T with a 30% deposit and 70% before shipment; letters of credit for larger orders, cards or PayPal for samples.
- 3
Order 3-10 samples
Samples ship within 5-7 business days by express courier. Take 3-10 units so you can test a long-standby unit, a rechargeable unit and a tag side by side rather than in sequence.
- 4
Test against your own conditions
Mount on the real asset, not a workshop bench. Check magnet hold under vibration, first-fix time where the device will actually live, alarm delivery on your platform, and the packet format if you run your own server.
- 5
Agree customisation
Confirm logo method, housing colour, packaging, serial prefix, APN, server endpoint and reporting profile. Settle firmware behaviour here, before tooling and production scheduling.
- 6
Place the production order
MOQ is 50-100 units depending on the product; white-label starts at 100 units. Production begins after design approval and deposit: in-stock models ship in 3-7 days, custom or high-volume runs 15-25 days.
- 7
QC, documentation and shipping
We run final QC and you may arrange third-party inspection. Shipping is FOB Shenzhen or CIF to your port by air, sea or express, with commercial invoice, packing list, HS codes and certification documents for customs.
Test before you commit
Order 3–10 sample units and evaluate them on your own platform or on Traqcare before placing a production order.

Buying questions
Which SKYWONDER asset tracker has the longest battery life?
The W09 GPS Tracker for Equipment publishes the longest figure: a 4200 mAh lithium-manganese pack (CR123A*3) providing up to three years of continuous service under standard operating mode. On raw capacity the GT76 is largest at 20000 mAh, then the solar Y8 at 15600 mAh. Actual life depends on reporting interval, signal quality and temperature, confirmed per configuration at quotation.
Do magnetic GPS trackers hold on a moving trailer or excavator?
Yes, on clean steel. The GT76 uses five neodymium magnets and the W09 four, both for a no-tools mount on metal. Aluminium, GRP and rusted steel reduce holding force, so use a bracket there and keep the unit out of the wheel-arch spray line.
What is the MOQ for asset trackers, and can I mix models?
MOQ is 50-100 units depending on the product, and white-label starts at 100 units. For a first order we can arrange a smaller mixed-model trial batch so you can validate the hardware in the field before committing to volume.
Can I get samples before a bulk order?
Yes. Samples of 3-10 units ship within 5-7 business days by express courier. Take more than one model so you can compare a long-standby unit against a rechargeable one on your own assets; send the asset type, deployment country and target reporting interval and we will propose the shortlist.
Which protocol and platforms do the asset trackers work with?
Trackers report over GT06; dashcams and MDVRs use JT/T 808. Devices run on our white-label Traqcare platform (web, iOS and Android) and are compatible with Traccar, Wialon, Navixy and GPS-Trace with no ports to open. See developers.
Should I buy 4G or 2G asset trackers?
Buy 4G unless you have a specific reason not to. The W08 and SW05 are 2G devices and still suit markets where 2G is stable and cheap, but network sunsets make them a poor choice for a multi-year deployment. See 4G versus 2G or 3G.
What warranty and returns terms apply?
All devices carry a 12-month manufacturer warranty against manufacturing defects, with firmware updates, technical support and spare parts. Unopened stock may be returned within 30 days; the buyer pays return shipping and a restocking fee may apply, and custom or white-label production is non-returnable.
How long does production take after I place the order?
In-stock models ship in 3-7 days. Custom or high-volume runs take 15-25 days after the deposit, depending on quantity and the level of OEM work, and ship FOB Shenzhen or CIF to your port with full export documentation.
