A logistics operation is not one tracked object. It is a powered vehicle that changes trailers, a trailer that sits in a yard for days, a container crossing borders on someone else’s chassis, and cargo loaded and unloaded several times a trip.
Each has a different power supply, theft profile and useful reporting interval. The common mistake is fitting hard-wired vehicle trackers to unpowered trailers.
Tractor and rigid truck: hard-wired 4G tracker
The powered unit has 9-90 V available, so it takes a hard-wired tracker reporting continuously, and the tractor and rigid workflow is the same one covered on the fleet management solution page. The J11 lists a 9-90 V supply range, 25 mA at 12 V, and dual server IPs so it fails over if one endpoint drops.
The GT06 4G and GT10 cover the same job more simply; the J11 caches positions out of coverage and resends them on reconnect, and the GT10 stores blind-spot data.
Trailer and swap body: battery-powered asset tracker
A trailer has no permanent power. It needs a self-contained unit with its own battery and a magnetic mount, reporting on a schedule rather than continuously — the W09, W10 and GT76 class.
Container: the same device, harder conditions
Containers add a steel enclosure, salt air and long dwell periods, so pick a sealed body with a tamper alarm. The Y9 adds solar charging, a Hall-effect tamper alarm and water-drop detection for marine legs.
Pallet and roll cage: short-range tags
Below trailer level a cellular tracker per pallet rarely pays back. The Portable BLE Tag Tracker reports through a crowd-sourced Bluetooth network instead of its own SIM, which fits high-count units inside depots.
Which long battery life GPS tracker suits trailers and containers?
Battery-powered asset trackers are specified by standby duration, not feature count. Check the standby figure on each product page rather than assuming a class average.
The W09 GPS Tracker for Equipment is the long end of the range: a 4200 mAh lithium manganese pack rated for up to three years of continuous service in standard operating mode, with four neodymium magnets for a no-tools mount on steel. What actually drains the battery
- Reporting interval. Every wake-up costs a GNSS fix plus a cellular attach, and the attach is the larger share.
- Signal quality. A unit in a steel container retries the attach, and retries cost more than a clean connection.
- Motion duty cycle. G-sensor wake-on-movement keeps a parked trailer near idle, then reports properly once it rolls.
- Cold. Cell chemistry loses usable capacity at reefer temperatures, so mount on the chassis or door frame rather than inside the cold box.

How does cold chain temperature monitoring work with a GPS tracker?
A cold chain temperature GPS tracker samples temperature on the same schedule as position and sends both in one record, so every reading carries a place and a time. That pairing makes the output an audit trail rather than a chart.
There are two ways to get the value. The W12 collects in-vehicle temperature and humidity itself. Everything else reads a probe over a serial input.
The D12 5-channel dashcam exposes dual RS232 ports for fuel level sensors, cargo temperature and humidity monitors, TPMS, passenger counters and RFID readers, and its published application list includes reefers. On the tracker side the H8 lists an optional TTL/RS485 channel for the same purpose.

Excursion alerts
Set thresholds per route type, not per fleet. A frozen run and a chilled pharma run cannot share a band, and a fleet-wide threshold produces alerts nobody reads.
Agree a minimum duration before an alert is acted on. A door opening at a delivery stop lifts the reading briefly; a failed compressor holds it above the band for an hour.
Audit reports
- Decide what a per-trip export has to show — timestamp, position and reading on every row — before rollout.
- Decide whether you need every trip or only the trips that breached a threshold, with duration and peak value.
- Set the retention period from your own contract terms, and check local regulations for how long records must be kept.
Trailer and container mounting, reporting interval and battery trade-off
Mounting is a two-minute job on the right surface. Magnetic units such as the W09, GT76, W10 and SW05 hold on clean steel; avoid aluminium skins and GRP panels.
Position it where the antenna sees sky but a hand does not reach easily: the chassis rail near the kingpin, or a roof rib on a box body. Inside a loaded steel container, expect degraded positioning; the GT76 falls back to WiFi and LBS. Reporting interval decides everything else. The tiers below are qualitative on purpose, because the real figure depends on signal quality, temperature and how much the asset moves. We confirm expected life per model and configuration at quotation.
Worked example: sizing the data plan
Use your own numbers. Let N = tracked assets, I = reporting interval in minutes while active, H = active hours per day, D = active days per month.
Records per asset per month = (60 / I) x H x D. A GT06 position packet is roughly 30 bytes on the wire, so raw payload = (60 / I) x H x D x 30 bytes per asset, times N for the fleet.
Then add overhead, which dominates at this packet size: TCP/IP headers, keep-alives, reconnect handshakes and carrier rounding. Budget a multiple of the raw payload and size the SIM plan from that. The packet format is in the GT06 protocol guide.

Decide these five first
- Geofence per depot, customer site and border post. Entry and exit events give arrival times without a phone call.
- Time spent at customer sites. Agree the free time allowed at each site, then confirm with us how Traqcare reports it. That is a demurrage conversation you can evidence.
- Unauthorised movement. On a parked asset, a vibration alarm outside operating hours is the earliest theft signal available. The GT76 light sensor and Y8 Hall-effect alarm fire when the unit is removed.
- Temperature excursions. Agree the band per route type and the duration a reading must hold.
- Assets that stop reporting. Any asset that has not reported inside its expected window. On long-standby fleets this catches flat batteries, pulled units and dead SIMs first.

- Utilisation per trailer: moving hours, idle days, depots visited. Confirm the available report set before rollout.
- Time at customer sites, ranked, so the commercial team argues from data. Ask which standard reports cover it.

How to roll out trailer and cold chain tracking
Failed deployments fail on process, not hardware. The sequence below is deliberately slow in the first two steps.

Count and classify the assets
Split the fleet into powered units, unpowered trailers and containers, temperature-controlled bodies, and anything below trailer level. Each group gets one device class and one profile.

Samples ship in quantities of 3-10 units within 5-7 business days by express courier. Test them on your hardest asset: the loaded steel container, or the trailer idle three weeks in the yard.
